In the afternoon of May 19th the International Criminal Bar (ICB) had the great pleasure of meeting Ms. Gabrielle Louise McIntyre, Chef of Cabinet of the United Nations Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), responsible for drafting, reviewing and revising almost all major judgements and decisions of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and Appeals Chambers of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Ms. McIntyre is a Cambridge graduate, jurist and international law expert, who has published and lectured widely on the subject. She served as acting Head of Chambers of the ICTY, and as former advisor to Australia’s Office of the Attorney General. In addition, she has collaborated with the International Criminal Court and Special Court for Sierra Leone, and in numerous projects related to human rights, gender equality and criminal law.
In our meeting at the United Nations MICT we discussed our future projects, especially relating to a graduate academic programme in which the ICB is currently engaged. This academic program aims to prepare future professionals and scholars of international criminal law, and to facilitate professional access to international tribunals and institutions. It will provide the consolidated and updated legal concepts of international criminal law and neighbouring legal areas, in English and French, together with Spanish, and will focus on a especially practical approach, studying the legal practise, procedure and jurisprudence of the relevant international tribunals and international institutions. The practical approach is also ensured through seminars with guest lecturers linked to our professional network, that will involve experts such Ms. McIntyre, among other lawyers and experts from international courts, universities and international institutions, as well as through carrying out visits, training courses and internships.
This Master of international criminal law projected by the ICB and several stakeholders, including the Courts in The Hague, aims to facilitate the professional practice of our alumni in the tribunals and institutions studied, including the United Nations MICT, and will be supported both through simulations and moot courts with their distinctive procedure, and through the preparation of legal documents and research papers in accordance with the criteria, style guidelines and languages of the international tribunals and institutions. The Master projects the assistance in the preparation of applications to the international courts and institutions, and therefore, ensuring the professional exercise of our students, that is to say our main objective.
The ICB is delighted to announce that, as a result of the meeting, Ms. Gabrielle McIntyre will be joining and heading the team of advisors of the ICB’s Master in International Criminal Law.
